As 2021 comes to a close, Women*s Student Services is reflecting on these unprecedented times. While it can be easy (and extremely important) to remember the hardships, it is also important to celebrate our wins. Here are some of the wins we have to celebrate this year:
1. Kamala Harris became the 49th Vice President of the United States.
2. Kathrin Jansen led the charge to create the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.
3. Sarah Thomas was the first female referee to officiate a Super Bowl.
4. Rachel Levine and Sarah McBride become the first openly transgender individuals in the Senate.
5. Simon Biles proves a real champion puts their mental health first.
6. Chloe Zhao became the second women ever and first Asian women to win the Oscar for Best Director.
7. MJ Rodriguez was the first transgender individual nominated for a lead acting Emmy.
8. Britney Spears’ conservatorship ended.
9. JoJo Siwa and Jenna Johnson Chmerkovskiy became the first same-sex couple to compete on Dancing with the Stars.
10. Taylor Swift broke the Spotify record for most-streamed album in a day as she reclaims ownership of her music.
What are some wins YOU are celebrating this year? Take some time to reflect on all you have accomplished. We made it. On behalf of Women*s Student Services, thanks for a great semester and have a safe and relaxing break. We look forward to seeing you again in the new year.
