November Highlights in Women's History

November is, for many, a rough point in the school year where final projects, papers, assignments, and applications start catching up to us. It’s important to take some time and step back from the hectic nature of this month and focus on our wins. Today, W*SS wants to share some wins with you— major highlights in women’s history that we can celebrate together! So sit back, relax, and enjoy some historical women’s wins that you can use to motivate your own.


Early November


November 1st, 1848 - The New England Female Medical School merges with Boston University to become one of the first co-ed medical schools.


November 4th, 1924 - The first female governor of Wyoming, Nellie Tayloe Ross, is elected into office.


November 5th, 1872 - Susan B. Anthony votes for the first time (and is arrested for doing so). 


November 5th, 1968 - The first African-American woman is elected into Congress: Shirley Chisholm.


November 6th, 2018 - Peggy Flanagan of the White Earth Nation is elected into office as lieutenant governor of Minnesota, the first female Native American to hold the position.


November 8th, 1910 - The state of Washington passes a constitutional amendment guaranteeing a woman’s right to vote.


November 8th, 1984 - Dr. Anna Fisher becomes the first American mother and third American woman in space on the Discovery shuttle.


Mid-November


November 11th, 1979 - Bethune Museum and Archives, a center for African-American women’s history, opens in Washington, D.C.


November 11th, 1993 - The Vietnam Women’s Memorial opens in Washington, D.C to honor the 265,000 women who voluntarily served during the war.


November 14th, 1889 - Journalist Elizabeth Cochran (known as Nellie Bly) completes her sail around the world in 72 days, 6 hours, 11 minutes, and 14 seconds.


November 14th, 1903 - The US Women’s Trade Union League is established.


November 14th, 1946 - the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to Emily Greene Balch, co-founder of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom.


Late November


November 21st, 1918 - Women in the UK granted the right to stand for election as candidates for Members of Parliament.


November 21st, 2019 - Barbara Lagoa confirmed by the US Senate to the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta. She was the first Hispanic woman and the first Cuban American woman to sit on the Florida Supreme Court.


November 22nd, 1909 - The New York Shirtwaist Strike (the “Uprising of the 20,000”) begins when Clara Lemlich, tired of hearing male speakers talk about the disadvantages of striking, storms the podium and calls on workers to strike. Two days later, thousands of workers walk off their jobs.


November 22nd, 2005 - Angela Merkel elected as Germany’s first female chancellor.


November 23rd, 2005 - Elle Johnson Sirleaf is elected as President of Liberia, the first African woman to be elected as head of state and lead an African country.

November 24th, 2019 - 10,000 people march in Rome the weekend before International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.


November 28th, 1881 - the first organizational meeting is held for the predecessor group to the American Association of University Women.

November 30th - Native Women’s Equal Pay Day recognizes the wage gap between Native American women and White, non-hispanic men.
