Setting the Standard

By: Mariam Turkey, Undergraduate Intern

It all starts with you. High self-esteem is a frame of mind that allows one to hold oneself in high regard. The way you treat yourself on a daily basis, shows others how to treat you. It shows others what you will accept and communicates a certain standard that they will be held to.

You can boost your self-esteem in many ways such as using positive affirmations correctly. Affirmations such as “I'm going to have a successful day!” are very popular. Making a simple declaration such as “ I am going to have a successful day!” ironically only works for those whose self-esteem is already high. In order for affirmations to work when your self esteem is lagging, make them more believable. For example, change “I’m going to have a successful day!” to “I’m going to have a successful day because I’m going to wake up early today!”.

Imagine your car is dirty, with wrappers and trash everywhere. And a stranger steps into your car...how comfortable would they feel with tossing trash in your car? How different would it be if you had a car that was spotless? And a stranger steps into your car...how comfortable would they be then? The thought of tossing trash in your clean spotless car wouldn't even cross their mind, because they see the standard you have set, they see what you tolerate and what you accept and they know they will be held to that same standard. Others will only do what you allow them to do.

How you view yourself is important! People will treat you how you treat yourself. If you’re constantly speaking negatively about yourself or disrespecting yourself, others will see that as an excuse to do the same. If one does not know their worth, how can they expect others to?
