Women's History Month

By: Makenzie Morales, Graduate Assistant

Today is not only the first day of March, but also the first day of Women’s History Month. Here at Women*s Student Services, we have been busy planning and preparing for various events and programming to celebrate the month. We are excited to share Women’s History Month with all of you and we hope you can join us at the exciting events that will take place throughout March.

Women’s History Month has its origins as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress passed Pub. L. 97-28, which requested the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982 as “Women’s History Week” (KNKX, 2022). In 1987, the National Women’s History Project petitioned for Congress to pass Pub. L. 100-9, which designated the entire month of March in 1987 as “Women’s History Month” (KNKX, 2022). Since 1995, March has become recognized as “Women’s History Month” on an annual basis. This month is used as a time to recognize and celebrate the contributions women in the United States have made to forward movements for gender equity. History is often told through the lens of the privileged and many women and non-binary folks have been intentionally left out of the story, despite their significant contributions. Women*s Student Services will be highlighting a prominent historical and/or current figure every day throughout the month of March to highlight their dedication to gender equity.

While it is important to recognize these brave figures in the movement, it is also crucial to use this month as a moment to reflect on significant people in your own life who work as sources of inspiration. Who is the most inspiring and influential woman in your life? Take a moment to thank them for all they do for you and tell them why you appreciate them. Women*s Student Services also encourages you to show yourself love and appreciation throughout March. We are all going through collective societal trauma, and giving yourself moments of validation and care is more important now than ever. Happy Women’s History Month!
