A Culture, Not a Costume

By: Makenzie Morales, Graduate Assistant

The months of October and November are my absolute favorite. The trees change colors, the leaves fall to the ground, and the weekends quickly fill with fall festivities. I particularly love October because it means Halloween is right around the corner. It's the one day a year when you can be as creative as you want, imagining your own reality for one night.

As exciting as Halloween is, this is your reminder to leave the racist costumes behind. Costumes appropriating different cultures in ways that are offensive and racist have become more and more common over the years. Many costumes that mimic other ethnic and racial groups have an intense historical context that reference horrendous aspects of the nation's history.
