Lately, being queer in the United States has been exhausting. Around the country, there have been countless Anti-Trans bills passed attempting to limit gender-affirming care for people of all ages and, ultimately, the public expression of trans individuals. With the influx of these bills, it feels as if trans and gender non-conforming people are being told to erase their identities and mold themselves into the status quo. We are told to hide because some people are uncomfortable and unwilling to see us as human.
To help myself (and hopefully you) cope, I have created a list of LGBTQ+ films and tv shows that have excellent queer representation. If you’re looking for a show to unwind to, I have that. Or if you’re looking for a suspenseful thriller, I have also included that. Queer representation is extremely important at this moment when we are struggling to exist.
At the end of this list, I will also be including various organizations that you can donate to on campus or around the country.
The Owl House | Disney Plus
“The Owl House” follows Luz after she stumbles upon a portal to the Demon Realm where she meets her rebellious mentor Eda. “The Owl House” made history when Luz was introduced as Disney’s first bisexual lead character. I love the show for its adventures and diversity.
Anything’s Possible | Prime Video
“Anything’s Possible” “follows Kelsa, a confident high school girl who is trans, as she navigates through senior year. When her classmate Khal gets a crush on her, he musters up the courage to ask her out, despite the drama he knows it could cause” (IMDB). I have not watched this film yet, but I am very excited to watch a romance film following a trans lead.
Wendell & Wild | Netflix
“Wendell & Wild” follows two scheming demon brothers as they attempt to trick Kat to summon them into the land of the living. The film’s character Raúl, an artistic boy voiced by Sem Zelaya, is the first trans character to appear in a stop-motion film.
Crush | Hulu
An aspiring artist is forced to join her high school's track team however, this allows her to get to know her long-time crush. Things become messy as she starts to develop feelings for another teammate, who is also her crush’s sister. “Crush” is a fun and easy watch that is perfect for watching with friends or when you need to finish some homework.
Poker Face | Peacock
“Poker Face” follows Charlie in this “murder-of-the-week” comedy as she encounters various queer stars like Jameela Jamil, Rowan Blanchard, Clea Duvall, and Cherry Jones (IMDB). Charlie’s superpower in this show is her ability to tell when someone is lying. “Poker Face” stars long-time LGBTQ+ ally, Natasha Lyonne. This show is a great watch for fans of Natasha Lyonne and murder comedies.
