As the Holiday season steadily approaches, festivities and joyous spirits fill the atmosphere around us. Despite it being a time to come together to show appreciation for the connections we have with others, it’s also an important time to remain vigilant. In 2019 alone, over 20,000 people were stolen from their families and forced into human trafficking. Human trafficking is an enormous issue and those who prey on others are especially active during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. During these times, it’s easy to become distracted when we’re out shopping for gifts or travelling to see family and friends. However, it is critical to always be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts when a situation feels uncomfortable or threatening. Additionally, a major component of the holidays is to be thankful for what you have while also taking time to give to those in need. If you are looking to support the fight against human trafficking and support survivors, please consider volunteering or donating to the organizations below:
Helpful tips to avoid human trafficking:
Avoid walking alone
Trust your instincts and be prepared to defend yourself
Do not engage with suspicious looking persons
Don’t trust easily
Ensure you have a means of communication at all times
Meet strangers in public places
How to spot human trafficking:
Signs of physical abuse (bruises, burns, scars, malnourishment)
Limited interaction with others (appear to be isolated, lack of eye-contact, avoids conversations or answering questions)
Victim is closely guarded
Victim may appear intimidated by their companion
