Last Saturday marked a significant moment at Michigan State University as 150+ people gathered in the MSU Union for the first ever H.E.A.L. Sexual Health Conference. HEAL is an acronym that stands for “Healthcare, Education, Advocacy Leaders.” As I stood before a room filled with passionate advocates, dedicated leaders, and administrators, and said a few words of welcome, I was so grateful for the student leadership that brought us to this point. The conference was more than just a gathering; it was a culmination of months of hard work, dedication, and collaboration. From the initial planning stages to the execution of the event itself, every aspect was meticulously thought out and executed with care.
Throughout the day, attendees had the opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue, participate in workshops, and learn from speakers, panelists, and workshop presenters. The energy in the room was palpable as we discussed critical issues surrounding sexual health advocacy and leadership.
One of the highlights for me was witnessing the power of student leadership in effecting change. As someone who has dedicated nearly 25 years to higher education, I firmly believe in the incredible potential of students to drive social change. The HEAL Conference served as a shining example of this potential, as students came together to advocate for reproductive justice and sexual health care advocacy.
As I reflect on the event, I am filled with hope for the future. The HEAL Conference was not just a one-time event; it was a catalyst for change that will continue to reverberate across our campus and beyond. It has inspired me to redouble my efforts in advancing women and gender equity at Michigan State University and beyond.
I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of the HEAL Conference – from the organizers and volunteers to the speakers and attendees. Your dedication and passion are truly commendable, and I am honored to have been a part of this incredible event.
I also want to link to two different news media pieces that helped share awareness of HEAL.
As we move forward and think about next year’s conference, we’d like to put out an open call to anyone who is interested in joining together to work towards a future where sexual health care advocacy and leadership are not just priorities, but fundamental rights for all. Together, we can create a world where reproductive justice is no longer a privilege, but a reality for everyone.
