#YouGotThis: EmpowHERInspiring Confidence, Resiliency & Community

By: Sharron Reed-Davis, W*SS Program Coordinator and Emily Gerber, empowHER graduate intern

Being that 2024 is already off to a super fast start, we wanted to take the time to talk about this year's EmpowHER Leadership Retreat. EmpowHER recently became one of W*SS’s signature events. Scheduled for Saturday, April 20, 2024, at the MSU Breslin Center, the EmpowHER Leadership Retreat transcends being a mere event; it's a life-altering experience for not only the girls who attend, but also for college students engaged as mentors or volunteers. This is why this event is now connected to our office.

The empowHER Leadership Retreat, committed to its mission of fostering confidence and building resilience in young girls, stands as an emblem of empowerment and gender equity on the campus of Michigan State University.

Women*s Student Services engages students through programs, activities, social events, and educational workshops to work toward social change, inclusive campus environments, and equity for all. With the EmpowHER Retreat now being one of our office’s staple events, we are now able to advance our mission to not just MSU students, but to the broader community as well. We are elated to have this opportunity and hope that we can help create a larger impact.

The goal of the day-long retreat is to cultivate an environment where every girl feels valued, heard, and equipped to reach her fullest potential. Suzy Merchant, former MSU Women’s Basketball coach, founded this initiative with a profound personal connection to its cause, inspired by the tragic loss of April Bocian during the recruitment process. Suzy's commitment, along with active involvement from April's parents, underscores the program's dedication to creating a supportive community for girls navigating similar struggles.

  • SERVE AS A MENTOR! This event means a lot for the mentees as well as the mentors. As a Mentor you have the chance to participate in the full day of activities and connect with an amazing group of youth. There will be workshops, swag, and an awesome keynote speaker. A short training session and background check is required. (Learn more here! https://empowherretreat.com/mentors/

  • VOLUNTEER! We are also looking to recruit many volunteers to help with set up and on the day of the event. Background check is required. (Learn more here! https://empowherretreat.com/volunteers/)

  • PROMOTE REGISTRATION! Registration will open next week, on Monday, February 5. If you know of 4th - 9th grade girls in the mid-Michigan area who should attend, please share this post with them!
